NORTH BERGEN, NJ.- Yesterday, Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez reported that Detectives of the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Major Case Unit, arrested a 37-year-old North Bergen, New Jersey man in connection with a murder-for-hire plot.

On Tuesday, May 14, 2024, Detectives arrested Miguel Cortes, 37, of North Bergen outside his Paterson Plank Road residence. Mr. Cortes was transported to the Hudson County Correctional Facility where he was processed on the charge of first-degree Conspiracy to Commit Murder. Following being processed on the charge Cortes was remanded into custody pending future court proceedings in Hudson County Superior Court.

The charge stems from an investigation that began on Thursday, May 9, 2024, when the North Bergen Police Department received a tip of a possible murder-for-hire scheme that was unfolding. The initial investigation determined that Cortes offered money to another individual to murder a woman whom Cortes knew. The woman was not injured.

The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office has filed a pretrial detention motion to have Cortes detained pending trial on the charge. The motion has been tentatively to be heard on Monday, May 20, 2024.

“The rules of the court requires us to include a statement, that states: The charges outlined in this publication are merely accusations and the defendant and or defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond reasonable doubt.”
