ELIZABETH, NJ.- Union County Prosecutor William A. Daniel reported, that last Friday, May 24, 2024, a 38-year-old Elizabeth, New Jersey man was sentenced to 20 years in New Jersey State Prison for the fatal shooting of Shamar Brown, 34, of Elizabeth, New Jersey.

Last Friday, Deshon Fleming, 38, appeared in Union County Superior Court and was sentenced by Superior Court Judge Stacy Boretz to a 20-year term in New Jersey State Prison on the charge of Aggravated Manslaughter. According to the No Early Release Act, Judge Boretz ordered Fleming to serve 85% of his custodial sentence before becoming eligible for parole.

The sentence stems from an incident, when on December 16, 2021, at approximately 8:30 p.m., members of the Elizabeth Police Department responded to a 911 Emergency Call reporting a shooting at the intersection of Second and Bond Streets in the City of Elizabeth.

Upon arrival, Police Officers found Shamar Brown, deceased from a gunshot wound. A subsequent investigation by Detectives of the Union County Homicide Task Force and the Elizabeth Police Department was able to identify Fleming as the suspect and the individual responsible for the death of Mr. Brown. Fleming was then located and taken into custody and charged.

“We are grateful for the hard work of Assistant Prosecutor Scott Peterson, Homicide Task Force Sergeant Christopher Scuorozo, Detective Richard Acosta, and officers of the Elizabeth Police Department on this case,” said Union County Prosecutor Daniel. “The Union County Prosecutor’s Office, together with law enforcement agencies throughout Union County, are committed to ensuring that those who commit such egregious acts are held accountable. Our thoughts remain with Mr. Brown’s family and friends during this time.”
