TOMS RIVER, NJ.- Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer reported, on Friday, May 31, 2024, following a nearly six-week trial, a jury sitting in Ocean County, New Jersey found Christopher Gregor, 32, of Monroe Township, New Jersey guilty of Aggravated Manslaughter in connection with the death of his 6-year-old son, who has only been identified as C.M. in April of 2021.
The jury also found Gregor guilty of Endangering the Welfare of a Child in connection with events that occurred on March 20, 2021, in Barnegat Township, New Jersey.
Gregor is scheduled to be sentenced on August 2, 2024, in Ocean County Superior Court, at which time Gregor will face a potential 30-year New Jersey State Prison term on the charge of Aggravated Manslaughter subject to the No Early Release Act which will require Gregor to serve 85% of his custodial sentence before becoming eligible for parole. Gregor will also face a 10-year term for the charge of Endangering the Welfare of a Child.
According to documents in the case, on April 2, 2021, members of the Stafford Township Police Department responded to Southern Ocean Medical Center following the death of a six-year-old boy, who was later identified as C.M. On April 3, 2021, an autopsy was performed by the Ocean County Medical Examiner’s Office, and it was determined that C.M. sustained injuries due to blunt-force trauma.
During the investigation into the child’s death, Detectives from the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office and the Barnegat Township Police Department uncovered evidence that revealed that Gregor had committed acts of abuse against the child in Barnegat Township on March 20, 2021. Accordingly, Gregor was arrested and charged with Endangering the Welfare of a Child on July 7, 2021. Gregor was initially lodged in the Ocean County Jail but was released under New Jersey Bail Reform Laws.
On March 3, 2022, the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office received a report from the Prosecutor’s Office medical expert, indicating that C.M. died as a result of blunt-force impact to the chest and abdomen and determined the manner of the child’s death to be homicide.
An extensive investigation by Ocean County Authorities determined that the child, C.M. was in the custody of Gregor at the time the child sustained the life-threatening injuries, resulting in the child’s death, and that Gregor was the individual responsible for C.M.’s death.
Six days later on March 9, 2022, Gregor was taken into custody by Detectives of the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Narcotics Strike Force, the Sea Bright Police Department, and the Barnegat Police Department. Gregor has remained incarcerated at the Ocean County Jail since his arrest.
“Christopher Gregor must live the rest of his life with the knowledge that he, and he alone, was responsible for the death of his one and only son. It is right and just that he bears that cross. While nothing can bring this precious child back to his family, we hope today’s jury verdict offers some semblance of peace and closure for those who knew and loved Corey. At long last, justice for Corey has been accomplished,” Prosecutor Billhimer stated on Friday.
