47-Year-Old North Carolina Man Charged With Taking His 10-Month-Old Daughter Out Of State

PATERSON, NJ.- Last Friday, a 47-year-old Cary, North Carolina was taken into custody in North Carolina, by U.S. Marshals and charged with second-degree Interference of Custody in connection with not returning his 10-month-old daughter to her mother.
According to Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes, on Tuesday, May 28, 2024, members of the Paterson Police Department responded to a residence located in the area of East 27th Street and 21st Avenue in the City of Paterson following receiving a report of a custody dispute.
Upon arrival, Police Officers learned from a Paterson mother, that Anthony Smith, 47, of Cary, North Carolina had not returned his 10-month-old daughter to her on May 26, 2024, according to their court-ordered visitation agreement. On June 5, 2024, following an investigation by Detectives of the Paterson Police Department and the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office, a warrant was issued for Smith’s arrest.
On Friday, June 7, 2024, members of the U.S. Marshals Service apprehended Smith in North Carolina. The child was found in good health and was reunited with her mother.
Smith is currently being detained in North Carolina pending extradition to New Jersey.
