63-Year-Old Newark Woman Was Charged Last Thursday For Running Down A Pedestrian And Fleeing Scene

KEARNY, NJ.- Last Thursday, a 63-year-old Newark, New Jersey woman was charged in connection with running down a 76-year-old man on Kearny Avenue and fleeing the scene, leaving the man seriously injured in the roadway, during the morning hours on Thursday, May 30, 2024.

     According to Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez, on Tuesday, June 11, 2024, Detectives of the Hudson County Regional Collision Investigation Unit formally charged Sonia Salazar, 63, of Newark, New Jersey, with Knowingly Leaving the Scene of a Motor Vehicle Collision Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury; Endangering an Injured Victim; and Causing Serious Injury While Driving on a Suspended or Revoked License.

     Last Thursday, Salazar was taken into custody at the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office in Secaucus, New Jersey. Salazar was processed on the charges and released on a summons complaint pending her first appearance, which has been tentatively scheduled for Thursday, June 20, 2024, in Hudson County Judicial Processing Court.

     The charges stem from an investigation that unfolded when shortly before 7:00 a.m., on Thursday, May 30, 2024, members of the Kearny Police Department responded to a 911 Emergency Call reporting that a pedestrian had been struck by a motor vehicle that fled the scene at the intersection of Kearny and Colombia Avenues in Kearny.

     Upon arrival, Police Officers found a 76-year-old Kearny, New Jersey man in the roadway, having sustained serious injuries. The man was immediately transported to University Hospital in Newark, New Jersey for treatment.

     Following a swift-moving investigation by Detectives of the Hudson County Regional Collision Investigation Unit and the Kearny Police Department were quickly able to identify the vehicle and Ms. Salazar as the operator of the vehicle, and the individual for striking the man and then fleeing the scene.
