LAKEWOOD TOWNSHIP, NJ.- On Thursday, June 20, 2024, a 20-year-old Jackson Township, New Jersey man surrendered himself to Lakewood Township Police Headquarters in connection with last Sunday’s pedestrian hit-and-run collision that occurred on Route 9 in Lakewood Township, New Jersey.

According to Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer, on Sunday, June 16, 2024, at just around 12:30 a.m., members of the Lakewood Township Police Department responded to the area of Route 9 and First Street in the Township, following receiving a report of a pedestrian hit-and-run.

Upon arrival, Police Officers learned that a white four-door sedan was traveling northbound on Route 9 when it struck a man attempting to cross Route 9 in a marked crosswalk. After striking the man, the white sedan fled the scene northbound on Route 9, leaving the man seriously injured in the roadway.

As a result of the collision, the man was immediately transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center for treatment of serious injuries where he remains and is listed in critical condition.

A swift-moving and extensive investigation by Detectives of the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office, and the Lakewood Township Police Department with the assistance of the Ocean County Sheriff’s Office quickly determined the vehicle that struck the man was a 2021 Kia K5. Further investigation determined that Brian Huerta-Tochihuitl, 20, of Jackson Township, New Jersey was the individual who was operating the Kia when the man was struck.

Following surrendering on Thursday, June 20, 2024, Huerta-Tochihuitl was formally charged with Knowingly Leaving the Scene of a Motor Vehicle Accident Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury. He was processed on the charge and was remanded to the Ocean County Jail pending future court proceedings in Ocean County Superior Court in Toms River, New Jersey.
