WASHINGTON, DC. On Tuesday, New Jersey Democratic Senator Bob Menendez submitted a letter stating that he will resign from the Senate effective August 20, 2024.

Tuesday’s announcement is a major moment in the political downfall of the once-powerful New Jersey Democratic Senator. It will finally end his scandal-plagued tenure in the Senate. Today’s announcement comes just one week after he was convicted on all 16 counts of the indictment on July 16, 2024, for his role in a years-long bribery scheme.

Receipt of the Senator’s resignation was announced at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday on the Senate floor during a brief exchange between Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and Senate Presiding Officer Senator Peter Welch, the Democratic Senator from Vermont.

New Jersey’s Democratic Governor, Phil Murphy, is expected to appoint a replacement to fill the remainder of Menendez’s term, which ends on January 3, 2025.

Today’s announcement will also bring an end to Menendez selling his power in the Senate for his own financial gain.
