66-Year-Old Phillipsburg Man Was Convicted Of The Repeated Sexual Assaults Of A Child

BELVIDERE, NJ.- Acting Warren County Prosecutor Anthony A. Picione reported that on Thursday, July 25, 2024, a jury sitting in Warren County, New Jersey, convicted a 66-year-old Phillipsburg, New Jersey man for the years-long pattern of sexually abusing a young child.

     Yesterday, following a trial, the jury found Joseph A Gares, 66, of Phillipsburg, New Jersey, guilty on the charges of first-degree Aggravated Sexual Assault; four counts of second-degree Sexual Assault; second-degree Criminal Attempted Aggravated Sexual Assault; fourth-degree Lewdness; and second-degree Endangering the Welfare of a Child.

     During the trial, Acting Assistant Prosecutors Gloria Rispoli and Brent DiMarco presented evidence that between the years 2012 and 2016, Gares sexually assaulted the child on multiple occasions when the child was between the ages of eight and eleven years old.

     Following the verdict, the Honorable H. Matthew Curry, J.S.C. has tentatively scheduled sentencing for August 30, 2024, at which time Gares faces a potential life sentence in New Jersey State Prison.
