FORT LEE, NJ.- Local and State Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting of a woman by a Fort Lee Police Officer that occurred early Sunday morning at the Pinnacle Apartment complex in Fort Lee, New Jersey.

According to the Attorney General’s Office, on Sunday, July 28, 2024, at around 1:30 a.m., members of the Fort Lee Police Department responded to a 911 Emergency Call from a man at an apartment at the Pinnacle Apartment complex located on Main Street in Fort Lee, reporting his sister was experiencing a mental health issue and needed to be taken to the hospital.

Upon arrival, a Police Officer spoke to the caller outside the apartment in the building’s hallway. The officer then opened the apartment door and encountered two women who appeared to be sisters. The sisters then told the Police Officer not to come in and to shut the door, which the officer did.

The Officer then stood outside and knocked on the door asking the women to open the door as additional Police Officers arrived. After the sisters refused to comply, Police Officers breached the door. As one of the sisters approached the Officers in the hallway, one of the Officers fired a single shot, sticking the woman in the chest.

Police Officers provided immediate medical attention, and the woman was transported to Englewood Hospital, where she succumbed to the gunshot wound and was pronounced deceased.

A 2019 law requires the Attorney General’s Office to conduct an investigation of a person’s death that occurs during an encounter with a law enforcement officer while acting in the officer’s official capacity or while the individual is in the custody of police.
