N.J. Governor Murphy & Democratic Law Makers Formally End “Annual Tax Holiday” For Back To School Supplies

TRENTON, NJ.- Well, once again, as New Jersey residents couldn’t believe it could get any worse living in the Garden State, New Jersey’s Democratic Governor Phil Murphy and fellow Democratic Lawmakers have just ended the “annual sales tax holiday” for back-to-school supplies for students preparing to return to school in September.

     While families across New Jersey continue to struggle with increasing inflation, they will now be strapped with another increase as many residents are struggling to put food on their tables. In late June, the N.J. Legislature, controlled by Democrats, formally ended the tax break for parents that had been in effect for the past two years.

     In the wake of June’s decision, the Division of Taxation officially announced the halting of the state’s tax holiday that was posted online that instructed retailers to charge sales tax on all taxable items.

     Families with children in elementary school through high school are set to spend an average of around $874.68 this summer on clothing, shoes, back-to-school supplies, and various electronics, according to an annual survey released by the Washington, DC-based National Retail Federation.

     According to the survey, total back-to-school spending this year is expected to top just around $40 billion nationwide, slightly down from last year. Inflation still remains a key concern for many across not only New Jersey but throughout the nation, as this year’s back-to-school shopping season kicks off in the upcoming days.

     With the end of New Jersey’s back-to-school annual sales tax holiday and inflation numbers ticking slowly upward, New Jersey school children may find themselves without the necessary items for the upcoming 2024/2025 school year.
