TEANECK, NJ.- Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella reported a 26-year-old New York man has been taken into custody and formally charged in connection with the fatal shooting of his 26-year-old twin sister that occurred this morning in Teaneck, New Jersey.

As first reported by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office, on Thursday, August 15, 2024, just shortly before 8:30 a.m., members of the Teaneck Police Department responded to a report of a shooting at a private residence located on Hickory Street in Teaneck.

Victim Identified

Upon arrival, Police Officers discovered a woman, later identified as Naomi Hagley, 26, of Teaneck, New Jersey,  suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Ms. Hagley was immediately transported to an area hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced deceased.

The initial arriving Police Officers learned that the suspect was a family member who fled the scene. Detectives of the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit, along with the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office and the Bogota Police Department, responded to the scene, and an investigation ensued.

Detectives Determine

During the course of the investigation, Detectives determined that Jonathan D. Hagley, 26, who is the twin brother of Naomi, shot her multiple times and fled the scene on foot. A short time later, Hagley was located several blocks away from the shooting by Police Officers from the Bogota Police Department, who were providing assistance during the investigation. A handgun with a defaced serial number was found near the scene.

Charges Filed

Accordingly, Hagley was taken into custody and formally charged with first-degree Murder; second-degree Unlawful Possession of a Weapon; second-degree Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose; second-degree Certain Persons Not to Possess Weapons or Ammunition; third-degree Possession of a Defaced Firearm; and fourth-degree Obstruction of Justice.

Hagley was processed on the charges and was remanded to the Bergen County Jail pending future court proceedings in Bergen County Superior Court in Hackensack, New Jersey.

“The rules of the court require us to include a statement that states: The charges outlined in this publication are merely accusations, and the defendant and or defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond reasonable doubt.”
