29-Year-Old North Carolina Man Sentenced To Federal Prison For Having Sexual Relationship With Teen Girl

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA.- A 29-year-old North Carolina man who drove to Virginia to have sex with a 14-year-old girl he met on Instagram and lied about his age will be spending the next twelve years in federal prison for his actions.
On Monday, August 12, 2024, Rayvon Birden, 29, of Raleigh, North Carolina, appeared in U.S. District Court in Charlottesville, Virginia, and was sentenced by a U.S. District Magistrate Judge to 150 months in federal prison. Birden had previously entered a guilty plea in March to one count of Traveling in Interstate Commerce for the Purpose of Engaging in Sexually Illicit Conduct.

According to documents filed with the court, Birden contacted the 14-year-old girl who he met on the social media platform Instagram. During direct messaging on the platform, Birden represented that he was a 16-year-old teen named “Nolan.”
During messaging, Birden and the child exchanged phone numbers and began communicating regularly via text messages and Facetime. During the course of their conversations, Birden received nude images of the girl, and suggested they meet up, and expressed a wish to have sexual intercourse with the girl.
Birden then drove from his home in North Carolina to meet the girl at a hotel near her Virginia home, where they had sex on multiple occasions and at least one encounter Birden filmed.
