24-Year-Old Man Dies After Being Gunned Down Thursday Night On A Weehawken Street

WEEHAWKEN, NJ.- The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit and the Weehawken Police Department have taken a 67-year-old man into custody and charged him with a Thursday night shooting that claimed the life of a 24-year-old man.
Gunfire Reported
   According to Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez, on Thursday, August 17, 2024, shortly around 7:00 p.m., members of the Weehawken Police Department responded to a 911 Emergency Call reporting multiple gunshots fired in the area of Park Avenue, between 37th and 41st Streets in Weehawken.
Upon arrival, Police Officers found a man, later identified as Jhonnier Gamboa Acosta, 24, on the ground suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.
Mr. Gamboa Acosta was immediately transported to Jersey City Medical Center, where despite life-saving efforts by Doctors, Mr. Gamboa Acosta succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at 8:14 p.m. The exact cause and the manner of death are pending autopsy results of the Regional Medical Examiner’s Office.
During the initial investigation, Police Officers of the Union City and Weehawken Police Departments apprehended a person of interest, identified as 67-year-old Juan Perez.
Suspect Charged
Following interviewing witnesses, including Mr. Perez, Detectives of the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit formally charged Perez with one count of first-degree Murder; second-degree Unlawful Possession of a Weapon; and second-degree Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose.
Perez was processed on the charges and was remanded to the Hudson County Correctional Facility pending future court proceedings in Hudson County Superior Court in Jersey City, New Jersey.
