PATERSON, NJ.- Longtime New Jersey Democratic Representative Bill Pascrell, Jr., passed away Wednesday morning at the age of 87, following serving 14 terms in Congress, according to an announcement from his family.
“It is with deep sadness that we announce that Bill Pascrell Jr., our beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away this morning. As our United States Representative, Bill fought to the last breath to return to the job he cherished and to the people he loved. Bill lived his entire life in Paterson and had an unwavering love for the city he grew up in and served. He is now at peace after a lifetime devoted to our great nation, America,” his family wrote in a statement posted on X.
First elected to Congress in 1996, Pascrell was a House Ways and Means Committee member.
After undergoing heart surgery during his 2020 re-election campaign, he suffered a setback when he was hospitalized earlier this year and suffered a further setback in July.
New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy released a statement after learning of Pascrell’s death.
“Tammy and I are deeply saddened by the passing of our dear friend, Congressman Pascrell, a giant of New Jersey and a lifelong champion for our most vulnerable neighbors,” Murphy stated. “We send our heartfelt condolences and prayers to his wife, Elsie, as well as their three children, Bill, David, and Glenn, and their grandchildren,” Murphy concluded.
Bill Pascrell is the second New Jersey U.S. House Democrat to pass away this year. The late U.S. House Representative Donald Payne Jr. (D-NJ) passed away this past spring.
