SPOTSWOOD, NJ.- Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone reported that following an investigation into allegations of the sexual assaults of two juveniles. On Thursday, August 22, 2024, a 45-year-old Spotswood, New Jersey, man was taken into custody and jailed after being formally charged.
Raymond Remus, 45, of Spotswood, New Jersey, was formally charged by Detectives with first-degree Aggravated Sexual Assault; second-degree Sexual Assault; and second-degree Endangering the Welfare of a Child.
Investigation Reveals
The charges stem from an investigation that began after Detective John Fedak of the Spotswood Police Department received a report regarding allegations that Remus had sexually assaulted two juveniles. Detective Fedak and Detective Ryan Kirsh of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit launched a joint investigation into the allegations.
Following interviewing witnesses, including the juvenile victims, and based on Remus’ prior conduct in another case, Detectives quickly determined that Remus sexually assaulted the two juvenile victims.
Faced Similar Charges
Remus had faced similar charges in the State of Georgia in 2019. According to reports in the Athens Banner-Herald, on August 19, 2019, a Jackson County, Georgia, grand jury returned a five-count indictment charging Remus with Aggravated Child Molestation; and a Aggravated Sodomy charges.
Authorities alleged in that case that Remus, between August 29, 2016, and September 28, 2018, committed sexual acts on a boy who was less than 10 years old.
Court documents filed in the court revealed that in 2022, the indictment against Remus was dismissed due to conflicting statements made by a clinical psychologist that the interviews with the victim had been contaminated by being conducted in a group setting rather than individually. Therefore making the statements “unreliable” and “unusable.”
As of today, Remus remains detained in the Middlesex County Adult Correctional Center. The Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office has filed a motion in Superior Court to detain Remus pending trial on the charges.
“The rules of the court require us to include a statement that states: The charges outlined in this publication are merely accusations, and the defendant and or defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond reasonable doubt.”
