PATERSON, NJ.- Following an investigation, on Friday, August 23, 2024, a 23-year-old Elizabeth, New Jersey, man was taken into custody and jailed after being charged in connection with the shooting of a 43-year-old Paterson, New Jersey woman that occurred on July 21, 2024 in the City of Paterson.

According to Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes, Angelo Jimenez, 23, of Elizabeth, was charged with first-degree Attempted Murder; second-degree Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose; and second-degree Unlawful Possession of a Weapon. Jimenez was processed on the charges and was remanded to an area county correctional facility.

Investigation

The charges stem from a shooting investigation that unfolded on Sunday, July 21, 2024, when, around 9:57 p.m., members of the Paterson Police Department responded to a 911 Emergency Call reporting a shooting with injuries in the area of Prospect and Market Streets in the City of Paterson.

Upon arrival, Police Officers found a 43-year-old Paterson, New Jersey, woman suffering from a gunshot wound. The woman was immediately transported to Saint Joseph’s University Medical Center, where she was treated and released. During the initial investigation, Police Officers found evidence of a shooting crime scene and determined that the woman had been shot in that area.

The subsequent investigation by Detectives of the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office and the Paterson Police Department were able to identify Jimenez as the suspect and the individual responsible for shooting and injuring the woman.

On Friday, just around 1:00 a.m., Officers of the Paterson Police Department Patrol Division spotted Jimenez near the intersection of Garfield Avenue and Jefferson Street in the City of Paterson. Officers took him into custody without incident.

If convicted of the charges, Jimenez faces up to 20 years in New Jersey State Prison, subject to the No Early Release Act, which would require Jimenez to serve 85% of his custodial sentence before becoming eligible for parole.

“The rules of the court require us to include a statement that states: The charges outlined in this publication are merely accusations, and the defendant and or defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond reasonable doubt.”
