SHREWSBURY, NJ.- Monmouth County Prosecutor reported on Friday that following an investigation, a 40-year-old Red Bank, New Jersey man was taken into custody and charged in connection with fleeing the scene after he struck and fatally killed a 23-year-old Toms River man in Shrewsbury, New Jersey on August 5, 2024.

Charge Filed

Jose Rodriguez-Jimenez, 40, of Red Bank, has been formally charged with one count of second-degree Knowingly Leaving the Scene of an Accident Under Certain Circumstances.

The charge stems from an investigation that began on Monday, August 5, 2024, when shortly after 2:45 a.m., members of the Shrewsbury Police Department responded to a 911 Emergency Call reporting an unresponsive man lying in the roadway on Shrewsbury Avenue in the northbound lane.

Upon arrival, Police Officers found the man, later identified as Mariano Codallos-Tepepa, 23, of Toms River, New Jersey, having succumbed to injuries from being struck by a motor vehicle. Mr. Codallos-Tepepa was subsequently pronounced deceased at the scene.

Investigation

Members of the Monmouth County Serious Collision Response Team, the Monmouth County Major Crimes Bureau, and the Shrewsbury Police Department investigated the ensuing incident and determined that Mr. Codallos-Tepepa was struck by a Ford Econoline van. They identified the driver as Rodriguez-Jimenez. Detectives concluded that Rodriguez-Jimenez did not stop after striking Mr. Codallos-Tepepa and did not report the collision to the Police.

“The rules of the court require us to include a statement that states: The charges outlined in this publication are merely accusations, and the defendant and or defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond reasonable doubt.”
