Bronx, NY Man Charged With Sexually Assaulting Bergen County Teen 5 Years Ago

GARFIELD, NJ.- According to Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella, on Wednesday, following an investigation, a 36-year-old Bronx, New York, man was taken into custody and charged in connection with the sexual assault of a teen that occurred on multiple occasions in 2019 in Bergen County, New Jersey.

Sex Crimes Report

     The charges stem from an investigation that began on Friday, May 31, 2024, when the Garfield Police Department contacted the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit regarding a report of the alleged sexual abuse of a child under the age of sixteen that had occurred in the past, and an investigation was launched by Detectives.

     During a nearly month-long and extensive investigation by Detectives of the Bergen County Special Victims Unit, the Garfield Police Department, and the Teaneck Police Department determined that Renaldo W. Baxter, 36, of Bronx, New York, sexually assaulted the teen in Garfield, New Jersey, and Teaneck, New Jersey, back between April and October of 2019.

Arrest Warrant Issued

     Accordingly, on Tuesday, June 25, 2024, Baxter was formally charged with one count of second-degree Attempted Aggravated Sexual Assault; one count of second-degree Sexual Assault; and two counts of third-degree Endangering the Welfare of a Child. Following charges being filed, a warrant was issued for Baxter’s arrest.

     On Wednesday, August 28, 2024, following a two-month investigation into his whereabouts, Baxter was located and apprehended by the New York City Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigations Child Exploitation Human Trafficking Task Force.

     Following his arrest, Baxter was placed into custody of the New York City Department of Corrections and transported to Rikers Island, where he will be detained pending extradition to Bergen County, New Jersey.
