Asbury Park Man Charged With Stabbing Woman On Labor Day In Asbury Park

ASBURY PARK, NJ.- A 39-year-old Asbury Park, New Jersey man was taken into custody and formally charged in connection with an unprovoked stabbing that occurred on Labor Day in Asbury Park, New Jersey.

     According to Monmouth County Prosecutor Raymond S. Santiago, on Monday, September 2, 2024, at around 2:37 p.m., members of the Asbury Park Police Department responded to a 911 Emergency Call reporting a stabbing on the 500 Block of Asbury Avenue.

     Upon arrival, Police Officers found bystanders rendering aid to a woman who had sustained multiple stab wounds and a suspect who was detained by bystanders at the scene. The woman was immediately transported to a nearby hospital and is listed in critical condition.  

Charges Filed

     The suspect, Travis A. Cavanaugh, 39, of Asbury Park, was taken into custody by responding Police Officers and formally charged with first-degree Attempted Murder; third-degree Unlawful Possession of a Weapon; and fourth-degree Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose.

     A subsequent investigation by Detectives of the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Bureau and the Asbury Park Police Department determined that Cavanaugh came up from behind the woman and began to stab her, continuing until a person intervened.

     The investigation remains active and ongoing.
