Paterson Man Charged In Connection With June 17th {aterson Shooting

PATERSON, NJ.- A 22-year-old Paterson, New Jersey, man was taken into custody early Monday morning and jailed after being charged in connection with the June 17, 2024, Paterson shooting of a 26-year-old Kerany, New Jersey man.
According to Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes, Rafael A. Cabrera Perea, 22, of Paterson, New Jersey, was taken into custody during the early morning hours of Monday, September 9, 2024, and formally charged with first-degree Attempted Murder; second-degree Unlawful Possession of a Weapon; and second-degree Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose.
Shooting Investigation
The charges stem from an investigation that began on June 17, 2024, when, shortly after 2:30 a.m., members of the Paterson Police Department responded to a 911 Emergency Call reporting gunfire in the area of Prospect and Ellison Streets in the City of Paterson.
Upon arrival, Police Officers located evidence of a shooting crime scene but were unable to locate a victim. While canvassing the area, Police Officers were notified that a 26-year-old Kearny, New Jersey, man had arrived at Saint Joseph’s University Medical Center, requesting treatment for a non-life-threatening gunshot wound.
Suspect Identified
A subsequent investigation by Detectives of the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office and the Paterson Police Department were able to identify Cabrera Perea as the suspect and the individual responsible for the shooting of the Kearny man.
On September 9, 2024, shortly before 2:00 a.m., Paterson Police Officers located and arrested Cabrera Perea without incident in the area of 21st Avenue and Summer Street in the City of Paterson. Cabrera Perea was processed on the charges and was remanded to the Passaic County Jail pending his first appearance and transfer to an area county jail pending future court proceedings in Passaic County Superior Court.
The Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office has filed a motion to detain Cabrera Perea pending trial. The motion will be heard by Passaic County Superior Court Judge.
If convicted on the charges, Cabrera Perea faces up to 20 years in New Jersey State Prison, subject to the No Early Release Act, which would require Cabrera Perea to serve 85% of his custodial term before becoming eligible for parole.
