PARAMUS, NJ.- Following a months-long investigation, on Tuesday, September 10, 2024, a 26-year-old Salisbury, Vermont, man was taken into custody at his Vermont residence by Detectives of the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office with the assistance of Vermont authorities on a charge of production of child pornography.

According to Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella, back in March 2024, the Paramus Police Department contacted the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Cyber Crimes Unit after receiving a report regarding an alleged incident involving a juvenile who was engaged with an unknown individual online on a social media platform.

Detectives Identify Suspect

An investigation by Detectives of the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office and the Paramus Police Department uncovered that the unknown social media user engaged in sexual conversations with the juvenile, instructing the child to expose himself on camera and send nude pictures of his private parts.

During a months-long investigation, Detectives were able to trace the account used to communicate with the child. Detectives identified the account as belonging to Jacob L. Gorton, 26, of Salisbury, Vermont, as the unknown individual who was enticing the boy to send him nude pictures.

Accordingly, on Friday, September 6, 2024, Detectives of the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office formally charged Gorton with one count of first-degree Production of Child Pornography, and a warrant was issued for his arrest.

Gorton Taken Into Custody

On Tuesday, Detectives of the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Cyber Crimes Unit traveled to Salisbury, Vermont, and executed a court-authorized search warrant on Gorton’s Salisbury residence with the assistance of the Vermont Attorney General’s Office, the Vermont State Police, U.S. Department of Homeland Security Investigations and the Middlebury Vermont Police Department.

Gorton was taken into custody at his residence on the Bergen County charge and brought before the Addison County, Vermont Superior Court. Following a first appearance, Gorton was released from custody pending a subsequent hearing scheduled for October 7, 2024, in Addison County. At that time, authorities will request that Gorton be extradited to Bergen County, New Jersey, to stand trial on the charges.

“The rules of the court require us to include a statement that states: The charges outlined in this publication are merely accusations, and the defendant and or defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond reasonable doubt.”
