PATERSON, NJ.- On Monday, September 23, 2024, a 27-year-old Paterson, New Jersey, woman was taken into custody and jailed after being charged in connection with the August 23, 2024, brutal stabbing of her 4-year-old niece in Paterson, New Jersey.

According to Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M.Valdes, Mabel Campechano, 27, of Paterson, was formally charged on Monday with one count of first-degree Attempted Murder; one count of third-degree Endangering the Welfare of a Child; one count of third-degree Endangering an Injured Victim; third-degree Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose; and fourth-degree Unlawful Possession of a Weapon.

Campechano was processed on the charges and was remanded to the Bergen County Jail pending future court proceedings in Passaic County Superior Court in Paterson, New Jersey. The Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office has filed a motion with the court to have Campechano detained pending trial.

Charges Are Result Of An Investigation

The charges are the result of an investigation that began on Friday, August 23, 2024, when members of the Paterson Police Department responded to a 911 Emergency Call Reporting that a child had been stabbed at a residence in the area of 24th Street and 10th Avenue in the City of Paterson.

Upon arrival, Police Officers found a four-year-old girl who had sustained multiple serious stab wounds. The child was immediately transported to Saint Joseph’s University Medical Center for treatment.

A subsequent investigation by Detectives of the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office and the Paterson Police Department were able to identify Campechano, the child’s aunt, as the suspect and the individual who committed the stabbing.

Campechano faces up to 20 years in New Jersey State Prison if convicted on the charges.

“The rules of the court require us to include a statement that states: The charges outlined in this publication are merely accusations, and the defendant and or defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond reasonable doubt.”
