TRENTON, NJ.- Acting Mercer County Prosecutor Theresa L. Hilton reported that on Wednesday, a jury sitting in Mercer County, New Jersey, convicted a 40-year-old Trenton, New Jersey, man for the July 16, 2022, shooting of a 38-year-old Trenton man.
On Wednesday, September 25, 2024, following a two-week trial, the jury found Henry Hutchins, 40, of Trenton, guilty on the charges of first-degree Attempted Murder; second-degree Unlawful Possession of a Weapon; second-degree Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose; and second-degree Certain Persons Not to Possess Weapons.
Evidence Presented At Trial
The conviction stems from an investigation that began on July 16, 2022, when at just around 11:00 p.m., while in the 100 Block of Chambers Street in the City of Trenton, Hutchins pulled out a handgun and shot the victim twice. After the victim fell to the ground, Hutchins walked over to the 38-year-old man, stood over him, and fired a third gunshot into the man. Following being treated at the hospital, the man was rendered a paraplegic as a result of the shooting.
Following a swift-moving investigation by Detectives of the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office and the Trento Police Department identified Hutchins as the shooter. Hutchins was taken into custody on July 18, 2022, and has remained in custody since his arrest.
Following his conviction, the court accepted the jury’s verdict and scheduled Hutchins for sentence on December 4, 2024, in Mercer County Superior Court. At that time, Hutchins faces a maximum sentence of life in New Jersey State Prison due to the jury finding him guilty as a persistent offender pursuant to New Jersey’s “Three Strikes Law.”
