MOUNT LAUREL, NJ.- A 33-year-old Lindenwold, New Jersey, man learned on Friday that he would most likely spend the rest of his life in New Jersey State Prison after he was sentenced to 90 years in prison for robbing and suffocating a 31-year-old Camden man to death inside a Mount Laurel hotel room in May 2020.

According to Burlington County Prosecutor LaChia L. Bradshaw, on Friday, September 27, 2024, Jawaad Ali, 33, of Lindenwold, appeared in Burlington County Superior Court and was sentenced by Superior Court Judge Terrence R. Cook to 90 years in State Prison for his June conviction in connection with the murder of Samer Alhalayqa, 31, of Camden, New Jersey.

In June, following a trial in Burlington County Superior Court, a jury deliberated for just two hours before convicting Ali on the charges of first-degree Murder; first-degree Robbery; first-degree Kidnapping; second-degree Burglary; second-degree Conspiracy to Commit Robbery; second-degree Desecration of Human Remains; third-degree Wrongful Impersonation; and fourth-degree Credit Card Theft.

Investigation Leads To Arrest Of Ali

The conviction and sentence stem from an investigation that uncovered and determined that on the night of May 8, 2020, in Mount Laurel, New Jersey, Ali, along with two co-defendants, Asia Boone, and Anthony Sermond-Guyton, lured Mr. Alhalayqa, to the Fairfield Inn on Century Parkway, where he was robbed, suffocated to death in a third-floor room and then dragged into the hallway of the hotel.

The investigation further uncovered that following the murder, Mr. Alhalayqa’s debit card was subsequently used to withdraw money from a nearby bank ATM, order items from Amazon.com, and pay for pizza at Papa John’s.

Co-Defendants Awaiting Sentencing

Ali’s co-defendants, Boone and Sermond-Guyton, have both pleaded guilty and are awaiting sentencing.

Prosecutor Bradshaw commended the investigative efforts of Detective Sergeant Brian Cunningham of the Burlington County Prosecutor’s Office, Detective Sergeant Sean Bristow of the Mount Laurel Police Department, and Assistant Prosecutors Nicole C. Lister and David Kras Bakardjiev for the investigation, arrest, conviction, and Friday’s sentence of Ali.
