PLUMSTED, NJ.- Today, October 4, 2024, Karly Simon-Sapp, 50, of Plumsted Township, New Jersey, appeared in Ocean County Superior Court and was sentenced by Superior Court Judge Kenneth T. Parker to 5 years in New Jersey State Prison in connection with her conviction for Theft.

According to Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer, on May 23, 2024, Simon-Sapp appeared before Judge Parker and pleaded guilty to one count of Theft concerning the embezzlement of funds from her former employer, the New Jersey Apartment Association. In addition to the term of imprisonment, Judge Parker ordered Simon-Sapp to pay $357,250 in restitution.

The conviction and sentence stem from an investigation by the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Economic Crimes Squad and the Plumsted Township Police Department after they received a report of theft.

Detectives Uncover Theft

During the investigation, Detectives uncovered that beginning in January 2016 and through January 2022, Simon-Sapp, as a bookkeeper for the New Jersey Apartment Association, forged the signatures of the Association’s President and Vice-President on over 100 checks written out to herself or cash.      At the culmination of the investigation on July 10, 2023, Simon-Sapp was taken into custody at her Plumsted Township home by Detectives of the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office and the Plumsted Township Police Department. After being processed on the charges, Simon-Sapp was released on a complaint summons.

Prosecutor Billhimer commended the investigative efforts of the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Economic Crime Squad and the Plumsted Township Police Department for the investigation leading to Simon-Sapp’s guilty plea and now her state prison sentence.
