BOSTON, MA.- A 36-year-old Salvadorian man residing in Somerville, Massachusetts, who was previously convicted of a narcotics offense and deported, has been sentenced to prison after he was found back in the United States.
On Wednesday, October 9, 2024, Tony Joel Umanzor, 36, of El Salvador, appeared in U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts and was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Richard G. Stearns to 8 months in federal prison for Illegal Reentry of a Deported Alien.
According to Acting U.S. Attorney Joshua S. Levy, in May 2024, Salvador Umanzor was indicted by a Federal Grand Jury on the charge and has remained in federal custody since his initial court appearance on May 9, 2024.
According to charging information unsealed in the indictment, Salvador Umanzor was removed from the United States on October 10, 2018, following a Massachusetts State conviction in 2013 for trafficking oxycodone, for which he was sentenced to five years and one day in state prison. Salvador Umanzor unlawfully reentered the U.S. and was located in April 2024 following being arrested again on an unrelated matter.
The case was investigated by the Boston, U.S. Customs and Immigration Enforcement’s Enforcement Removal Operations and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Elianna J. Nuzum of the Major Crimes Prosecution Unit.
