POINT PLEASANT, NJ.- On Friday, October 11, 2024, Salvatore Umek. 46. of Point Pleasant Beach, New Jersey, appeared in Ocean County Superior Court and was sentenced by Superior Court Judge Guy P. Ryan to 5 years in New Jersey State Prison. Umek appeared before Superior Court Judge Dina M. Vicari on June 10, 2024, and entered a guilty plea to Theft.

During Friday’s sentencing hearing, Judge Ryan ordered Umek to pay $107,517 in restitution to Point Pleasant Beach Fire Company Number 2 upon his release from prison.

Umek Sentenced For Theft From Fire Company

According to Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer, the guilty plea and Friday’s sentence stem from an investigation that began when the Point Pleasant Beach Police Department contacted the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Economic Crime Squad regarding a report they received about the theft of funds from the fire department. A joint investigation was launched.

During the investigation, Detectives determined that beginning in February 2019 and lasting through November 2021, Umek, as Treasure for the Fire Company, unlawfully transferred funds from the Fire Company’s bank account to pay off personal credit card debt in the amount of around $100,000. Umek also misappropriated additional funds directly into his bank account and used the money for his benefit.

Following the investigation, On July 12, 2023, Umek surrendered himself to Detectives at the Point Pleasant Beach Police Department, where he was processed on the theft charge and released on a summons pending court proceedings that ultimately led to his June 10, 2024, guilty plea and Friday’s prison sentence.
