CHARLESTON, W.VA.- On Thursday, October 17, 2024, Lannie Earl Shaffer, 33, of Charleston, West Virginia, appeared in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of West Virginia and was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Irene C. Berger to 37 months in federal prison followed by three years of supervised release for being a Felon in Possession of a Firearm.

According to U.S. Attorney Will Thompson and documents filed with the court, on August 31, 2023, Sheriff’s Officers were attempting to execute an arrest warrant for Shaffer for absconding from parole supervision in Sissonville, West Virginia and found Shaffer to be in possession of a Taurus .357-caliber revolver.

During the arrest, Shaffer was able to break free and flee in a vehicle. While fleeing, Shaffer struck a police vehicle and was taken into custody after crashing and rolling over his car.

Under federal law, a person who has previously been convicted of a felony is prohibited from possessing a firearm or ammunition. Shaffer admitted that he knew he was prohibited from possessing a firearm due to his prior conviction for conspiracy to commit a felony in Taylor County Circuit Court on May 18, 2020, for transferring and receiving stolen property in Kanawha County Circuit Court on February 5, 2015, and for burglary by breaking and entering in Kanawha County Circuit Court on December 10, 2010.
