Jersey City Woman Charged With Running Down Man & Fleeing

BAYONNE, NJ.- An apparent verbal altercation turns violent, leaving a 34-year-old Bayonne, New Jersey, man hospitalized in critical condition and a 34-year-old Jersey City, New Jersey woman, who is employed as a Jersey City 911 Police Dispatcher jailed after she was charged on Thursday, for running the man down and fleeing the scene last Sunday in Bayonne, New Jersey.
According to Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez, following an investigation into an early Sunday morning hit and run, Detectives of the Hudson County Regional Collision Investigation Unit on Thursday, October 17, 2024, arrested Kalimah Toon, 37, of Jersey City, New Jersey.
Charges Filed Against Toon
Toon has been formally charged with second-degree Aggravated Assault Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury; third-degree Aggravated Assault; third-degree Possession of a Weapon “motor vehicle” for an Unlawful Purpose; fourth-degree Unlawful Possession of a Weapon “motor vehicle;” third-degree Knowingly Leaving the Scene of a Motor Vehicle Collision Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury; third-degree Endangering an Injured Victim; and third-degree Hindering Apprehension.
Toon was taken into custody on Thursday at the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office in Secaucus, New Jersey. She was processed on the charges and was remanded to the Hudson County Correctional Facility pending future court proceedings in Hudson County Superior Court in Jersey City, New Jersey.
The arrest and charges stem from an investigation that began on Sunday, October 13, 2024, when shortly before 12:30 a.m., members of the Bayonne Police Department responded to a 911 Emergency Call reporting a pedestrian being struck by a motor vehicle that fled the scene on Route 440 near 22nd Street in the City of Bayonne.
Upon arrival, Police Officers discovered a 34-year-old Bayonne, New Jersey man suffering from multiple severe injuries after being struck by a vehicle. The man was immediately transported to Jersey City Medical Center, where he remains in critical condition.
Altercation Results In Man Being Struck By Vehicle
According to the Prosecutor, during the investigation, Detectives determined Toon and the victim were involved in an altercation on the shoulder of Route 440. During the altercation, Toon got into a Ford Escape and intentionally ran down and over the man with the vehicle and then drove away. It is reported that Toon and the man are known to each other.
Toon is employed by Jersey City’s Department of Public Safety as a 911 Emergency Dispatcher. Her current employment status is unknown.
