Lincoln County Man Pleads Guilty To Federal Gun Charge

CHARLESTON, W.VA.- On Thursday, October 17, 2024, Jason L. Norman, 42, of Ranger, West Virginia, appeared in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of West Virginia and pleaded guilty before U.S. District Court Judge Thomas E. Johnson to one count of Being a Prohibited Person in Possession of a Firearm.
   Following Norman’s guilty plea, Judge Johnston accepted the plea and scheduled sentencing for January 30, 2025. At sentencing, Norman faces up to 15 years in federal prison, up to three years of supervised release, and a $250,000 fine.
According to U.S. Attorney Will Thompson and documents filed with the court, on March 10, 2023, Norman possessed a Smith & Wesson M&P 15 .223 caliber rifle and a Mossberg model 500A 12-gauge shotgun at his Ranger, West Virginia home.
Federal Prohibits Convicted Felony From Possessing Firearms
Federal law prohibits a person with a prior felony conviction from possessing a firearm or ammunition. Norman knew he was banned from possessing the M&P 15 and Mossberg shotgun following his felony conviction for possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance in Lincoln County Circuit Court on April 13, 2017.
U.S. Attorney Will Thompson commended the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives’ investigative work, which resulted in Norman’s arrest and guilty plea.
