DETROIT, MI.- On Tuesday, October 29, 2024, Dametri J. Wade, 26, of Detroit, Michigan, appeared in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan and pleaded guilty before U.S. District Court Judge Mark A. Goldsmith to one count of Making a False Statement to a Federal Agent.
Following entering his guilty plea, Judge Goldsmith accepted the plea and scheduled sentencing for February 5, 2025, at which time Wade faces a maximum of five years in federal prison.
According to U.S. Attorney Dawn N. Ison and charging information filed with the court, Wade was present at the scene of a larceny on August 11, 2022, on Saint Maron Street in the City of Detroit while employed by the Detroit Police Department and driving a Detroit Police car.
The larceny perpetrators used fake and altered documents to make it appear they had the right to access the Maron Street property. Wade was present at the scene in his Detroit Police car to further the ruse that the perpetrators had the authority to enter the home.
Lies To Federal Agents
Federal agents interviewed Wade about this incident on December 19, 2022, during a bribery investigation. Wade denied any knowledge of the break-in at the Maron Street home. In fact, Wade knew that there was going to be a theft at the property and that his presence was necessary to give the look that the perpetrators were entering the property legally. Wade knew at the time when he made the false statement to the federal agents that he willfully lied to them.
“Lying to law enforcement is never acceptable, but for an officer sworn to uphold the law to do so is inexcusable,” stated U.S. Attorney Ison. “Wade’s conviction should send a strong message that no one, even a police officer, is above the law.”
Special Agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Detroit Police Department’s Professional Standards Bureau investigated the case.
