BOSTON, MA.- On Thursday, October 31, 2024, a Federal Grand Jury for the District of Massachusetts returned an indictment against a Dominican national who was deported in 2023 and unlawfully reentered the United States in September 2024 on federal drug charges.

The grand jury has charged Angel Martinez, also known as Aneudy Rios, 44, residing in Lawrence, Massachusetts, with the Distribution of Fentanyl; and Possession with Intent to Distribute Fentanyl. Following the unsealing of the indictment, U.S. Magistrate Judge Jennifer C. Boal entered a voluntary order of detention and scheduled the matter for a court hearing on December 3, 2024.

According To The U.S. Attorney’s Office

According to Assistant U.S. Attorney Joshua S. Levy and charging information filed with the court, Martinez is currently on supervised release for a 2019 federal drug distribution charge that resulted in a 60-month federal prison sentence. After completing his term of incarceration, Martinez was transferred to Immigration and Customs Enforcement for immediate deportation.

In September 2024, after being deported a year earlier, Martinez unlawfully reentered the United States and sold fentanyl to a cooperating witness during a controlled buy observed and recorded by law enforcement officers.

If convicted of the charges, Martinez faces up to 20 years in federal prison, at least three years of supervised release, and up to a $1 million fine. Martinez will also face deportation upon completion of his custodial term.

“The rules of the court require us to include a statement that states: The charges outlined in this publication are merely accusations, and the defendant and or defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond reasonable doubt.”
