Man & Woman Charged In Monday Morning’s Paterson Shooting

PATERSON, NJ.- Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes reported that following a swift-moving investigation, Jose Ortiz, 31, of Paterson, New Jersey, and Yesenia Adorno, also of Paterson, New Jersey, were taken into custody and jailed after being charged in connection with the shooting of a 46-year-old Paterson man that took place yesterday morning in the City of Paterson.

     On Monday, Detectives formally charged Ortiz with first-degree Attempted Murder; second-degree Unlawful Possession of a Weapon; second-degree Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose; third-degree Possession of a Firearm Without a Serial Number; and fourth-degree Possession of a High-Capacity Magazine. Adorno was formally charged with first-degree Attempted Murder.

     Ortiz and Adorno were processed on the charges and were remanded to the custody of the Passaic County Sheriff’s Office, pending transfer to an area county jail. The Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office has filed a motion with the court to have both Ortiz and Adorno detained pending trial in Passaic County Superior Court in Paterson, New Jersey.

     The charges stem from an investigation that began on Monday, November 4, 2024, when minutes after 8:30 a.m., members of the Paterson Police Department responded to a report of shots fired in the area of North Main and Arch Streets in the City of Paterson.

Police Find Man Shot

     Upon arrival, Police Officers found evidence of a shooting crime scene and a 46-year-old Paterson, New Jersey, man having sustained a non-life-threatening gunshot wound. The man was immediately transported to Saint Joseph’s University Medical Center for treatment.

Detectives Identify Ortiz And Adorno As Suspects

     An ensuing and swift-moving investigation by Detectives of the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office and the Paterson Police Department’s Shooting Investigation Unit were quickly able to identify Ortiz and Adorno as suspects and the individuals responsible for the shooting. Accordingly, Ortiz and Adorno were located and taken into custody on Monday, shortly after 10:00 a.m., near the intersection of North and Clinton Streets in the City of Paterson.

     If convicted at trial, both Ortiz and Adorno face up to 20 years in New Jersey State Prison subject to the No Early Release Act, which would require Ortiz and Adorno to serve 85% of their custodial terms before becoming eligible for parole.

“The rules of the court require us to include a statement that states: The charges outlined in this publication are merely accusations, and the defendant and or defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond reasonable doubt.”
