JERSEY CITY, NJ.- On Monday, November 4, 2024, Justin Goris, 20, of Queens, New York, appeared in Hudson County Superior Court and was sentenced by Superior Court Judge Mitchell Pascual to 15 years in New Jersey State Prison for the February 2022 Jersey City shooting death of 15-year-old Devin Bryant of Jersey, New Jersey.
According to Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez, in handing down the sentence on Monday, Judge Pascual ordered that Goris be sentenced under the No Early Release Act, which will require Goris to serve 85% of his custodial term before becoming eligible for parole. Goris previously appeared in Superior Court and pleaded guilty before Judge Pascual to one count of first-degree Aggravated Manslaughter.
Prison Sentence Stems From Fatal Shooting
The sentence stems from an incident that began when, on February 12, 2022, members of the Jersey City Police Department responded to a report of gunfire in the area of 112 Myrtle Avenue in Jersey City.
Upon arrival, Police Officers found a boy, later identified as Devin Bryant, 15, suffering from a life-threatening gunshot wound to his abdomen. Bryant was immediately transported to Jersey City Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased a short time later. A subsequent autopsy performed by the Northern Regional Medical Examiner’s Office determined the cause of death to be a Gunshot Wound to the Abdomen and the manner of death homicide.
During the ensuing investigation, Detectives of the Hudson County Homicide Unit and the Jersey City Police Department were able to identify Goris as the shooter and the individual responsible for Bryant’s death. After being identified, Goris was located and taken into custody, and charged. Goris, who was 17 years old at the time of the shooting death6, was initially charged as a juvenile, but the charges were later waived from Family Court to Superior Court.
