SCRANTON, PA. On Wednesday, November 6, 2024, Mugabe Baker, 37, an Illegal Immigrant residing in Sullivan County, New York, appeared in U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania and was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Robert D. Mariani to 12 months in federal prison, to be followed by one year of supervised release, for his convictions of Fleeing and Attempting to Elude a Police Officer.
According to U.S. Attorney Gerard M. Karam, on September 18, 2022, a National Park Ranger observed Baker speeding in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area.
As the Park Ranger attempted to conduct a traffic stop, Baker sped away from the Ranger instead of pulling over. As the Ranger initiated a pursuit, Baker’s vehicle reached speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour and nearly missed hitting two pedestrians while speeding through towns in New Jersey and New York.
The Park Ranger eventually terminated the pursuit due to the risks to the public. A subsequent investigation later identified Baker as the driver of the motor vehicle.
