Investigation Uncovers Victim Was Beaten To Death During Robbery
The conviction and sentence stem from an investigation that began on Saturday, June 18, 2022, when shortly after 12:15 a.m., members of the Asbury Park Police Department responded to the 1200 Block of Washington Avenue in the City after having received a report of a man severely injured. Upon arrival, Police Officers found a victim, later identified as Yahnie Patterson, 26, of Lakewood, New Jersey, lying in the roadway, suffering from severe head and neck trauma. Mr. Patterson was transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center, where, despite life-saving measures, Mr. Patterson tragically succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased on Monday, June 21, 2022.
A subsequent investigation by Detectives of the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office and the Asbury Park Police Department Determined that Rogers, along with Shakri A. Prince, 31, of Asbury Park, planned to rob Mr. Patterson of cash and his personal property following an hours-long dice game. Rogers chased Mr. Patterson out of an alley where the game had just finished, and Prince caught up with Mr. Patterson and struck him in the head with a handgun, knocking him to the ground, while Rogers brutally kicked and stomped Patterson about his head and neck as he lay in the street.
The investigation also resulted in two individuals, Erikah E. Handy, 24, of Neptune Township, and Tyonna N. Henderson, 34, of Asbury Park, being taken into custody and charged in connection with the robbery and aiding in Rogers and Prince’s flight.
Prince, Handy, and Henderson all pleaded guilty to various charges on Tuesday, October 29, 2024, and are awaiting sentencing, which has been scheduled for Friday, January 10, 2025.
