Charleston, W.VA.- Today, a 20-year-old Akron, Ohio, woman found out that she is about to face up to four years in federal prison after pleading guilty to using her cell phone to arrange the sale of illicit narcotics.

On Monday, November 18, 2024, Emariel Kanay Tyler, 20, of Akron, appeared in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of West Virginia and pleaded guilty before Senior U.S. District Court Judge John T. Copenhaver to Use of a Communications Facility to Facilitate Drug Trafficking.

After entering her guilty plea today, Judge Copenhaver accepted the plea and scheduled sentencing for February 26, 2025. At that time, Tyler faces up to 48 months in federal prison, followed by up to one year of supervised release and a $250,000 fine.

According to documents filed with the court and statements made during today’s plea allocation, on March 29, 2023, Tyler traveled from a Charleston, West Virginia, apartment to a residence in Wyoming County, West Virginia, with methamphetamine and fentanyl. Tyler admitted that she used her cellular phone to arrange the sale of the fentanyl to someone at the residence.

Tyler further admitted that during the phone conversation, she discussed the meeting location and the price to be charged for the fentanyl. Tyler exchanged the fentanyl for monetary payment at the meeting location but further admitted that she returned to Charleston with both the money and the fentanyl.

U.S. Attorney Will Thompson commended the investigative work of the Charleston Police Department for the investigation, arrest, and Tyler’s guilty plea today.
