Newark Man Charged With The Stabbing & Strangle Death Of Woman

PARAMUS, NJ.- A 21-year-old Newark, New Jersey man was taken into custody and jailed following being charged in connection with Monday’s brutal stabbing and strangling death of a 74-year-old Paramus, New Jersey woman inside her East Ridgewood Avenue home.
According to Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella, on Monday, November 18, 2024, shortly after 4:00 p.m., members of the Paramus Police Department responded to East Ridgewood Avenue in Paramus to conduct a welfare check on a 74-year-old woman.
Police Officers Find Woman Dead
Upon arrival, Police Officers made entry into the residence and discovered the body of Rita Acharya, deceased, on her couch. Accordingly, Paramus Police Officers notified the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit, and a joint investigation was launched. During the investigation, Detectives determined that Kishan S. Sheth, 21, of Newark, New Jersey, an acquaintance of Ms. Acharya, entered the home and murdered Ms. Acharya by strangling and stabbing her. Sheth then stole her car and debit card and made attempts to conceal his role in the murder before fleeing the area.
Sheth Taken Into Custody In Newark
Following the investigation, on Tuesday, November 19, 2024, Sheth was located and taken into custody without incident in Newark, New Jersey, by Detectives from the Bergen County Major Crimes Unit and the Paramus Police Department and with the assistance of the Bergen County Regional SWAT Team.
Detectives formally charged Sheth with first-degree Murder; first-degree Felony Murder; first-degree Home Invasion Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury; second-degree Unlawfully Disturbing, Moving, or Concealing Human Remains; third-degree Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose; and three related theft offenses.
Sheth was processed on the charges and was remanded to the Bergen County Jail pending future court proceedings in Bergen County Superior Court in Hackensack, New Jersey.
