BURLINGTON, VT.- On Monday, a 34-year-old Greenwood, Indiana, man with an apparent identity crisis pleaded guilty and was sentenced for criminally impersonating a federal agent and falsely stating he served in the United States Marines.

On Monday, November 18, 2024, Brandon Anderson, 43, of Greenwood, Indiana, appeared in U.S. District Court for the District of Vermont and pleaded guilty before Chief U.S. District Court Judge Christina Reiss to Making a False Statement to a Department or Agency of the United States.

During Monday’s hearing and following his guilty plea, Judge Reiss sentenced Anderson to time served and one year of supervised release.

On February 22, 2024, a Federal Grand Jury for the District of Vermont returned an indictment charging Anderson with two counts of Impersonation of an Officer or Employee of the United States; and one count of Making a False Statement to a Department or Agency of the United States.

According to U.S. Attorney Nikolas P. Kerest and documents filed with the court, Anderson, while in the District of Vermont, was wearing a tactical uniform with black body armor and a holstered firearm, impersonating a federal law enforcement official on two occasions.

Anderson was not, in fact, a federal law enforcement official during either occasion but instead was a privately contracted security guard for a federal agency. In addition, an ensuing investigation into Anderson’s activities revealed that, in becoming a security guard for the federal agency, he misled and falsely stated that he had served in the United States Marine Corps and received an honorable discharge when, in fact, it was uncovered that he never served in the Marines at any time.

U.S. Attorney Kerest commended the investigative work of Homeland Security Investigations, the Chittenden County Sheriff’s Department, and the South Burlington Police Department.
