BECKLEY, W.VA.- On Friday, November 22, 2024, Justin L. Saunders, 27, of Mabscott, West Virginia, appeared in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of West Virginia and was sentenced by Chief U.S. District Court Judge Frank W. Volk to 84 months in federal prison, to be followed by three years of supervised release for his previously entered guilty plea to Being a Prohibited Person in Possession of a Firearm.

According to U.S. Attorney Will Thompson and charging information filed with the court, on May 30, 2023, Raleigh County Sheriff’s Officer arrested Sauders in Beckley, West Virginia, on an outstanding felony warrant. During the arrest, Sheriff’s Officers found a Ruger EC9s 9mm handgun on Saunders.

Under federal law, a person with a prior felony conviction is prohibited from owning or possessing a firearm or ammunition. On May 30, 2023, Saunders knew he was prohibited from possessing a firearm due to his prior felony convictions for first-degree robbery and malicious wounding in Raleigh County Circuit Court in June 2012.

U.S. Attorney commended the investigative work of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives and the Raleigh County Sheriff’s Office.
