PARAMUS, NJ.- Last month, a 42-year-old Elizabeth, New Jersey, man surrendered to Bergen County law enforcement after being charged in connection with a string of burglaries that occurred earlier this year in Paramus and River Edge, New Jersey.
According to Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella, on Saturday, April 27, 2024, shortly after 8:30 p.m., members of the Paramus Police Department responded to a report of an attempted burglary at an Ehret Street home in Paramus. Upon arrival, Police Officers found a vehicle parked with the engine running with multiple suspects inside. Police Officers observed an additional man crouching down next to the vehicle.
As Police Officers approached the vehicle, the suspects scattered, but two men were taken into custody, including the driver, who was later identified as Jonnathan Diaz-Gomez, 42, of Elizabeth, New Jersey.
During the initial investigation by responding Police Officers, it was determined that the group was planning to burglarize a home. Police Officers arrested the driver, Diaz-Gomez, and charged him with third-degree Conspiracy to Commit Burglary, fourth-degree Possession of a Police Scanner, and Possession of Burglary Tools, a disorderly persons offense. Diaz-Gomez was processed on the charges and released on a complaint summons pending future court proceedings in Bergen County Superior Court.
Following Diaz Gomez’s arrest, Detectives from the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Crime Reduction Unit launched a joint investigation with the Paramus Police Department into other burglaries committed in the Paramus, New Jersey, area.
During the subsequent investigation, Detectives pinpointed three additional residential burglaries identified as part of the pattern related to the original April 27, 2024, Paramus attempted burglary.
Detectives further determined that on Tuesday, March 27, 2024, a burglary and theft occurred at a home on Hickory Avenue in Paramus. During that incident, the suspects entered the residence through a first-floor window, ransacked the house, and stole valuables. On Sunday, April 7, 2024, a burglary and theft occurred at a home on Bogert Road in River Edge, New Jersey. During that incident, the suspects entered the residence through a second-floor bedroom window and again ransacked the house and stole valuables.
On Saturday, April 20, 2024, a burglary and theft occurred at a Howland Avenue residence in River Edge, New Jersey. During this incident, the suspects entered the residence through a first-floor kitchen window and stole a home safe.
Following the broader investigation, Detectives were able to link Diaz-Gomez to each of these three burglaries. Accordingly, Detectives formally filed charges against Diaz-Gomez with multiple burglary and theft offenses in connection with the three burglaries and thefts.
After being notified of the additional charges on Tuesday, November 19, 2024, Diaz-Gomez surrendered himself to Detectives at the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office in Paramus, New Jersey. After being processed on the additional charges, Diaz-Gomez was released on a complaint summons pending future court proceedings in Bergen County Superior Court in Hackensack, New Jersey.
