WASHINGTON, DC.- The D.C. Metropolitan Police Department is continuing the investigation into an early Saturday morning fatal crash that occurred in Northwest, D.C. that claimed the life of a motorcyclist after they ran a red light and struck an unmarked Metropolitan Police vehicle.

According to D.C. Metropolitan Police Chief Pamela A. Smith, during the preliminary investigation, members of the Metropolitan Police Department’s Major Crash Investigation Unit determined that at approximately 4:18 a.m. on Saturday, November 30, 2024, an unmarked 2017 Ford Explorer Metropolitan Police vehicle being driven by an on-duty Metropolitan Police Commander was traveling westbound on the 1200 Block Columbia Road in Northwest, D.C.

As the Police vehicle entered the intersection at 13th Street with a green traffic light, it was struck on the driver’s side door by an unregistered 2023 Yamaha XT250 motorcycle being driven by an adult male who was moving at a high rate of speed and ran the opposing red traffic signal. The male driver of the motorcycle was ejected from the motorcycle upon impact. The Police Commander was uninjured during the collision and immediately called DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services to respond to the collision scene.

Despite life-saving measures by DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services, the man succumbed to his injuries and was subsequently pronounced deceased at the scene. Detectives are working to identify the motorcyclist who had no identification on him.

According to the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department’s protocol, the Police Commander has been placed on administrative leave until the final determination into the crash is made.

Anyone with additional information regarding this crash is urged to contact the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department at (202) 727-9099 or text your tip to the Department’s TEXT TIP LINE at 50411. All information will be kept confidential.
