Rutland Man Sentenced To Prison For Possessing Stolen Firearm

BURLINGTON, VT.- Today, December 2, 2024, John Ryea, 41, of Rutland, Vermont, appeared in U.S. District Court for the District of Vermont and was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge William K. Sessions, III to approximately 75 days in federal prison, to be followed by three years of supervised release for his previously entered guilty plea to a federal firearms violation.
Ryea had previously appeared in Federal Court in Burlington, Vermont, and pleaded guilty to Possession of a Stolen Firearm after being Convicted of a misdemeanor crime of Domestic Violence.
According to U.S. Attorney Nikolas P. Kerest and charging documents filed with the District Court, Ryea has a November 30, 2022, misdemeanor domestic violence conviction out of Rutland Superior Court, where he admitted to punching his then live-in girlfriend in the face. Ryea was on state probation for the misdemeanor conviction when he committed the offense to which he pleaded guilty today.
U.S. Attorney Kerest commended the investigative work of the Vermont State Police, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, and the Vermont Drug Task Force.
