Trenton Man Sentenced To Decades In Prison For 2022 Trenton Shooting

TRENTON, NJ.- A 40-year-old Trenton, New Jersey man learned on Wednesday that he would most likely die in New Jersey State Prison after a Mercer County Superior Court Judge sentenced him to nearly half a century of imprisonment for July 2022, cold-blooded attempted murder of a man.

According to Acting Mercer County Prosecutor Theresa L. Hilton, on Wednesday, December 4, 2024, Henry Hutchinson, 40, appeared in Mercer County Superior Court and was sentenced by Superior Court Judge Peter E. Warshaw to 50 years in State Prison, subject to the No Early Release Act, which will require Hutchinson to serve 85% of his custodial sentence before becoming eligible for parole.

On September 25, 2024, following a two-week trial, a Mercer County jury found Hutchinson guilty of the charges of first-degree Attempted Murder, second-degree Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose, second-degree Unlawful Possession of a Handgun, and second-degree Certain Persons Not to Possess Weapons. Additionally, the jury found Hutchinson to be a persistent offender under New Jersey’s Three Strikes Law.

Wednesday’s sentence stems from an incident that began on July 16, 2022, when, right around 11:00 p.m., while within the 100 Block of Chambers Street in the City of Trenton, Hutchinson pulled out a handgun and shot the victim twice. After the victim fell to the ground, Hutchinson stood over the defenseless victim and shot him a third time. As a result of the gunshot injuries, the victim was left as a paraplegic.

Two days later, on July 18, 2022, members of the Trenton Police Department apprehended Hutchinson and recovered the Smith & Wesson .38 caliber handgun used in the shooting.

“The jury delivered a clear and decisive verdict, and the judge’s sentence ensures accountability for the crime, a result that both the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office and the victim find just and appropriate,” said Assistant Prosecutor Jefferey C. McElwee, Jr., who prosecuted the case with Assistant Prosecutor Michael J. Mennuti.
