Akron Man Sentenced To Prison For West Virginia Gun Crime

HUNTINGTON, W.VA.- Today, December 9, 2024, Drew Lamont Scruggs, 48, of Akron, Ohio, appeared in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of West Virginia and was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Robert C. Chambers to 27 months in federal prison, to be followed by three years of supervised release for his guilty plea to Being a Prohibited Person in Possession of a Firearm, Convicted Felon.
According to U.S. Attorney Will Thompson and charging documents filed with the District Court, on February 27, 2024, Scruggs pawned a Kimber Stainless Ultra Carry II .45 caliber handgun at a Huntington, West Virginia business.
During the hearing, Scruggs admitted to possessing the firearm that later was determined to be stolen at the time he possessed the firearm.
Federal law prohibits a person from owning or possessing a firearm or ammunition with a prior felony conviction. Scruggs knew he was a prohibited person because of his previous felony convictions for voluntary manslaughter in June 1997, cocaine trafficking in April 1998, and in November 2012, and failure to comply with an order of a police officer in November 2015 and in August 2019. All of the convictions were out of the Summit County Court of Common Pleas in Ohio.
U.S. Attorney Thompson commended the investigative work of the Huntington Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.
