CHARLESTON, W.VA.- On Thursday, December 12, 2024, Roger Wayne Legg, 33, of Charleston, West Virginia, appeared in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of West Virginia and was sentenced by Senior U.S. District Court Judge John T. Copenhaver to 60 months in federal prison, to be followed by five years of supervised release for his previously entered guilty plea

Legg had previously appeared in District Court and pleaded guilty to one count of Possession of a Firearm in Furtherance of a Drug Trafficking Crime.

According to U.S. Attorney Will Thompson and documents filed with the court, on September 20, 2023, Legg possessed around 694 grams of methamphetamine and a loaded Diamondback .380 caliber handgun in a backpack he was carrying in Charleston, West Virginia.

During his plea allocution, Legg admitted that he intended to sell and distribute the methamphetamine that he possessed. He further admitted that he possessed the handgun for security and protection while he sought to sell the methamphetamine.

U.S. Attorney Thompson commended the investigative work of the Charleston Police Department’s Special Enforcement Unit and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, which led to Legg’s successful prosecution.
