BURLINGTON, VT.- Following an investigation, on Monday, December 16, 2024, Joseph Vaillancourt, 42, of White River Junction, Vermont, was taken into custody and charged by federal criminal complaint with Possession of an Unregistered Silencer. The fire suppression device did not contain a serial number.
Vaillancourt made his first appearance in Federal Court in Burlington, Vermont, and was ordered detained by U.S. Magistrate Judge Kevin J. Doyle pending future court proceedings in the U.S. District Court for the District of Vermont.
According To The U.S. Attorney’s Office
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office and charging information filed in the criminal complaint, on October 18, 2024, members of the Hartford, Vermont Police Department, during the execution of an unrelated state of Vermont arrest warrant at Vaillancourt’s residence, discovered an unregistered silencer, thirteen firearms, and over 1200 rounds of ammunition.
Agents of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives identified the silencer subject to the National Firearms Act.
If convicted at trial, Vaillancourt faces up to ten years in federal prison. A U.S. District Court judge would determine the actual term of imprisonment at the time of sentencing based on the seriousness of the offense and Vaillancourt’s prior criminal history, if any.
