NEW ORLEANS, LA.- On Tuesday, December 10, 2024, Varion Rogelio Lobo-Barahona, 31, a Honduran national living in New Orleans, Louisiana, illegally, appeared in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana and was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Brandon S. Long for being an Illegal Alien in Possession of a Firearm.

During the sentencing hearing, Judge Long sentenced Lobo-Barahona to time served, three years of supervised release, and a mandatory $100 special assessment fee. Lobo-Barahona will face deportation upon release from prison.

According to U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans and charging documents filed with the court, around November 23, 2023, Lobo-Barahona, a Honduran national present illegally in the United States, was found in possession of a Smith & Wesson handgun.

On that date, Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office deputies observed a motor vehicle without a license plate being driven carelessly at a high rate of speed while attempting to avoid being pulled over. Deputies were able to stop the vehicle successfully. During the motor vehicle stop, Jefferson Parish deputies noticed a handgun in Lobo-Barahona’s waistband. The gun, a Smith & Wesson SD40 .38 caliber, had been reported stolen.

A subsequent records check revealed that Lobo-Barahona, a Honduran citizen, was deported on July 5, 2013, and illegally re-entered the United States without first obtaining permission to do so.

U.S. Attorney Evans commended the investigative work of the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office and Customs and Immigration Enforcement for successfully prosecuting Lobo-Barahona.
