Police Charge Man For Friday Northwest D.C. Assault

WASHINGTON, DC.- Metropolitan Police have charged a 42-year-old man in connection with Friday’s armed assault and property damage inside a Northwest, D.C. establishment.

     According to D.C. Metropolitan Police Chief Pamela A. Smith, on Friday, January 3, 2025, members of the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department’s Fourth District responded to the 5900 Block of Georgia Avenue in Northwest, D.C., on a report of a man with a gun.

     Upon arrival, Police Officers were informed by two victims that a man had entered the establishment and threatened the two victims with a handgun. The suspect then damaged property inside the establishment before fleeing the scene and walking northbound on Georgia Avenue.

Police Identify Suspect

     During the subsequent investigation, responding Officers observed the suspect and detained him. Upon being positively identified, the man, identified as Maurice Hughes, was taken into custody and formally charged with Assault with a Dangerous Weapon; and Felony Destruction of Property.

     Hughes was processed on the charges and was remanded to the D.C. Central Detention Facility pending future court proceedings in the District of Columbia Superior Court.

“The rules of the court require us to include a statement that states: The charges outlined in this publication are merely accusations, and the defendant and or defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond reasonable doubt.”
