WASHINGTON, DC.- On Monday, a 26-year-old Northwest, D.C., was taken into custody by members of the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department and charged in connection with an attempted stabbing of two employees that occurred on January 1, 2025, inside the Safeway supermarket in Northwest D.C.

According to D.C. Metropolitan Police Chief Pamela A. Smith, on Wednesday, January 1, 2025, at around 9:00 p.m., members of the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department’s Northwest District responded to a report of an altercation at the Safeway on Corcoran Street in Northwest, D.C.

Upon arrival, Police Officers were advised that a man, identified as Warren Welcome, 26, of Northwest, D.C., who had been previously banned from entering the store, had entered. A store employee alerted the store’s security guard. The two then approached the man, who became irate when asked to leave the premises.

The man then pulled out a knife and attempted to stab the security guard and the employee. Neither the security guard nor the employee were injured in the confrontation. The man then fled the store shortly thereafter.

On Monday, January 6, 2025, Metropolitan Police Officers arrested Welcome and formally charged him with Assault with a Dangerous Weapon. Welcome was processed on the charge and was remanded pending a first appearance.
